Rural Provider Gap Analysis & Analytics Platform

A multi-source analytics platform unifying Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial claims with provider, census, and workforce data to evaluate rural healthcare access and specialty shortages statewide.

Problem

Rural health stakeholders had no integrated view of healthcare capacity: provider availability, specialty shortages, utilization patterns, and population health needs were scattered across separate datasets that couldn’t support statewide planning decisions on their own.

Approach

Designed a multi-source analytics platform combining Medicaid claims, Medicare claims, commercial claims, provider enrollment data, census information, workforce indicators, and social determinants of health measures. Built reusable SAS and Python pipelines to classify diagnoses, map conditions to services, generate provider access measures, and produce Power BI-ready datasets, then layered interactive visualizations on top for geographic analysis, specialty-level access evaluation, workforce planning, and provider participation analysis.

Outcome

Brought multiple statewide claims, provider, demographic, and workforce datasets into a single analytical environment supporting provider access evaluation and workforce planning. The reusable pipelines turned what would otherwise have been a one-time study into a repeatable analytics capability, adaptable for future refreshes or expansion to additional states, and enabled detailed evaluation of provider supply, specialty shortages, payer participation, and rural access disparities statewide.
